We only use water and steam, even when removing old, stubborn wallpaper, and we make sure to minimize any potential damage or mess to your walls. 1. PROTECT ADJACENT SURFACES When our professional painters arrive at your property, they will move any furniture in the area where they will be working, cover the furniture with plastic sheeting, and protect your floors from water and steam with building board or similar material . When we are finished, we will pack up all the debris and remove it for you.
  2. APPLY STEAM TO SOFTEN PAPER AND ADHESIVE   We let the steam penetrate the wall covering and scrape off the top layer with knives. It will usually come off in two parts, first the decorative top layer, then we reapply steam to the paper backing and remove it. It may come off in large sheets or it may not. And this depends on different factors, such as whether the wallpaper installer used a suitable primer. In any case, we are careful to damage the walls as little as possible so that there is not too much repair.
  3. CLEANING THE WALLS Believe it or not, you should always clean the walls before painting! But this is especially important after removing wallpaper. When we remove the wallpaper, some of the adhesive that has softened comes off with the paper, but a lot of it remains on the wall. This adhesive will absolutely ruin any paint job you try to apply over it because it creates an unstable surface. We use a safe cleaning solution without TSP to clean all surfaces before applying primer and paint.
  4. PREPARATION AND PAINTING If there is limited damage to the walls due to the removal, we may be able to do a quick pass over the area with minor patching, priming and painting. In some cases, you may want to have the walls «thin coat» where we apply 2 coats of joint compound over the entire surface to achieve a very smooth and even surface. If you live in a unit in a pre-war building that hasn’t been renovated in some time, we may find numerous cracks or problem areas under the wallpaper and sometimes that’s why someone decided to put it up in addition to the decorative value. These are the kind of things that would deserve a thin coat of the walls before painting them. We can usually pull out a corner during our estimate to see what we’re dealing with there.
